Aquaman #1 was published in 1962, with Arthur Curry finally moving on from a long stint as a back-up star in Adventure Comics. (He'd also done some time in World's Finest and Detective Comics) DC was as fortunate as Marvel was with the Sub-Mariner when it came time to call in a regular artist, with Nick Cardy responding to the allure of the sea. His pen proved perfect for the early Silver Age adventures, as Cardy's sturdy brushes and firm lines provided gravitas and drama to these barrel-chested epics.

This classic first issue continued DC's habit of leaving the numbering off a comic's debut. The epic three-part story also introduces the playful water sprite Quisp. Aquaman, of course, would later thrive with a dramatic overhaul in the early '90s, where Curry's heavy beard and hook hand would prove to be one of the few acclaimed "extreme" revisitations of the time.

Aquaman would also become one of the most acclaimed characters of DC's big-screen productions of recent years. Jason Momoa is moving on to play Lobo in 2026's Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, while fans eagerly anticipate the return of Aquaman to the DCEU — leaving this already scarce book to remain a top collectible of DC's Silver Age.
