John Buscema pencils/Tom Palmer inks; cover; 1970; image size 10" x 15"
1st Appearance of Valkyrie (later revealed to be Enchantress)Although this is not the Valkyrie who'd go on to star in Defenders, this is the first appearance of a character with this now-iconic design. Even though this Valkyrie turns out to be the Enchantress in disguise, her costume, created by Buscema, has held firm with very few changes for the 50+ years since it debuted on this cover. Pen and ink. The logo and corner box are photostat pasteups with some hand drawn corrections. The balloons and caption are hand lettered pasteups. Some tape at edges and on pasteups. Art is cropped to the image area on three edges, the border on the sides and bottom is a modern reproduction, the art is not affixed to the backing and can be safely removed. Otherwise in excellent condition. Signed by Palmer in the upper margin.
Artists Information
'The Michelangelo of comics.' Buscema was one of the mainstays of Marvel Comics during its 1960s and 1970s heyday, best known for his run on the The Avengers and The Silver Surfer, and for over 200 stories featuring the sword-and-sorcery hero Conan the Barbarian. In addition, he penciled at least one issue of nearly every major Marvel title, including long runs on two of the company's top books, Fantastic Four and Thor.
Tom Palmer is an award winning American artist best known for extensive work for Marvel Comics, including well-remembered runs paired with pencilers Neal Adams on The Avengers and Uncanny X-Men; Gene Colan, on titles such as Doctor Strange, Daredevil and Tomb of Dracula; and John Buscema, on The Avengers. He also inked the entire run of John Byrne’s X-Men: The Hidden Years, and has influenced later generations of inkers like Klaus Janson, Josef Rubinstein and Bob McLeod.
