1st full app. Sgt. Rock; scarce!

Our Army at War #83 is now in the DC archives as the official first appearance of Sgt. Rock, with the WWII hero endangered by a cocky cohort in "The Rock and the Wall!" It's true that there had been a few prototype turns by a gruff Sarge in WWII tales prior to this classic issue. This stirring tale of true manliness really is a proper introduction to Rock, via writer/editor Robert Kanigher and full art by Joe Kubert. Sgt. Rock would soon lead Easy Co. into becoming the stars of Our Army at War as the wartime comic became one of the industry's biggest success stories. The book officially changed the title over to Sgt. Rock in 1977 to continue its run right up to July 1988.

Although plans for a Sgt. Rock movie are still up in the air, fandom for the grizzled and grumpy soldier has enjoyed sustained support for many years. DC’s answer to Nick Fury, Franklin Rock, was a mainstay of the publisher’s output from the 1960s to the 80s. The character’s first appearance is not only a hard-to-find book, but it is also extremely rare in high grades, with only a handful of copies graded above this example. This is a very handsome FN+ copy with nice, strong colors and impressive structural integrity. Not to mention, if the Sgt. Rock film is green-lighted during the DCU, you could find yourself in possession of a very valuable investment with lots of upside potential.
