Hitler cover, Nazi invasion of New York before Pearl Harbor attack
USA Comics #2 features the first appearance of Captain Terror — who was soon to be replaced by Captain America as the book's regular cover star. Idle playboy Dan Kane (who's assured everyone that he has a weak heart) is established here as an early superhero from the Spanish-American War, and he brings his secret identity out of retirement to take on the Nazis. The sensational cover (attributed to Joe Simon) makes for a dramatic debut, too, with Captain Terror foiling an underwater Nazi invasion of NYC months before the real-life bombing of Pearl Harbor. (The interior story keeps Captain Terror at sea while foiling the Black Claw.)
Captain Terror may have been overshadowed by Captain America, but the character would still end up with a surprisingly enduring legacy. Fans in the comics industry would keep Dan Kane showing up into Marvel's Modern Age. (A time-traveling Wolverine even posed as Captain Terror during an Avengers/Invaders limited series!) This issue also introduces patriotic crimefighters The Vagabond and Major Liberty, with the latter meeting a Nazi sympathizer while getting caught up in a take on "The Most Dangerous Game." And as a bonus rarity, this issue boasts the Red Skull on the back cover for a classic ad where he makes a pitch for
Young Allies #1!

This outstanding 7.5
USA Comics #2 presents exceptionally well for its grade, with only 5 copies graded higher of the scarce 33 unrestored copies in the CGC Census. The rich colors and solid construction are a rare opportunity to appreciate the impact this same issue had when it first hit the newsstands back in 1941!
