Curt Swan cvr/art; 1st app. of Krypto (the Superdog); animated DC Super-Pets movie 2022!Likely influenced by the mid-50’s craze for canine adventure shows like Rin Tin Tin and Lassie, Otto Binder and Curt Swan dreamt up a pet for the teenage Kal-El. In this issue, the first to feature the now-beloved Krypto the Superdog, the space-bound pup arrives on Earth after his ship is knocked off course. Having been the subject of an experiment of Superman’s father, Jor-El, Krypto enjoys many of the same benefits of the humans from his home planet, granting him superpowers like his owner. The reunion was short lived in this issue, as Krypto’s sudden appearance put Superboy’s secret identity at risk. Luckily, interest in the new animal hero was immediate and powerful, and Krypto was soon a featured regular in the Superman/Superboy mythos and continues to be a popular character into the modern day.
