Pep Comics #36 makes history with the first appearance of Archie Andrews on a comics cover. That was a particularly big deal in 1943, when the adventures of a normal teen and his Riverdale gang had to compete with a big boom of superheroes fighting a wild array of WWII villains. The folks at MLJ Publishing had struck gold with Archie, though, and beloved Archie artist Bob Montana is predicting the future as the Shield and Hangman unwittingly usher in their own demise. Bentley of Scotland Yard won't be around for much longer, either. Archie and his pals, however, were just settling into decades of becoming one of the industry's biggest success stories. This vital title is a true comics milestone, and a must-own for any Archie fanatic.

Only 1 copy graded higher of the scarce 42 copies on the CGC Census! Archie Andrews has been one of the longest-running iconic characters in comics that is not a superhero (although he has sort of been one at times). Appealing to a strong sense of Americana and nostalgia, Archie has endured through the ages thanks to an innocence and relatable appeal that strikes a nerve with popular culture. The first cover appearance of the red-headed teenager is certainly an important milestone in comic book history, one which is extremely rare, especially in higher grades. With only 42 copies on the census, this 7.0 example is one of five second-highest graded known, with only one book higher up the boards. Bright colors beam off of this cover, and the book’s sturdy spine and eye appeal are very impressive as well.
