1st issue (numbering continued from Uncle Sam Quarterly #8)As their popularity and sales records grew, the Blackhawk team slowly took over the title spot of good old Uncle Sam's solo series -- probably the only un-patriotic move the military team ever pulled. This first issue of their solo run led to an unprecedented four-decade career, stretching well into the late 1980s, thanks to a dedicated readership who stuck with them thanks to their distinctive style, larger-than-life weaponry, immediately likeable characters, and, of course, those awesome costumes. While DC later picked up the title when Quality went under, the strip's reputation was forged in these early, beautifully drawn WWII-era exploits, which continue to delight collectors and war comics fans.
