foreign edition
French (April 4, 1939); early appearance of Superman in France (only months after the US strips premiered in January)! Superman is re-titled "Yordi"!
Superman made his debut in Adventures Weekly #10 on March 7, 1939; however, Adventures #6-9 from February 1939 featured preview advertisements for the forthcoming hero.
A translator for Aventures recommended that the character be named Superman, but Ettore Carrozo, the head of the publishing company, declined this suggestion. Carrozo, an Italian veteran of World War I, held anti-fascist beliefs and left Italy for Paris in the 1920s, resisting the adoption of the concept of the "superman" promoted by the far-right regimes in Italy and Germany. In 1924, he established Librairie Moderne in Paris, which evolved into Société Anonyme Générale d'Éditions (SAGÉ) in 1939; additionally, he launched the magazine L'aventure in 1936, which ceased operations in 1941.
Given that Superman originates from another planet, Ettore Carrozo desired for him to possess an exotic first name. He suggested naming Superman after the son of a friend who had escaped Franco's regime: Jordi. However, due to a technical complication with the lettering of the "J", the name Yordi was ultimately selected. Similarly, Jor-L was changed to Aldebaran, Lora was altered to Liam, Krypton was modified to Crypton, and Lois Lane was renamed Loyse Lane.
