Justin Green pencils and inks; complete 1-page story; c. early 1970s; image size 11" x 17"

Wonderful one-page strip by Green, heralded creator of the seminal 'Binky Brown Meets the Holy Virgin Mary', one of the defining works of Underground autobiography, and a huge influence on the work of R. Crumb (Crumb has stated numerous times that Green is his favorite cartoonist). This strip was published as part of The New Nickel Library, the brainchild of The San Francisco Comic Books Company's Gary Arlington and Eric Fromm, designed to be a collection of 500 single page comics and/or illustrations, the project was stalled when Bill Gains threated to sue over many of the illustrations being based on classic EC Comics covers. Pen and ink. Art is in good condition, there is minor overall wear, some white correction paint that has flaked off, and there is a light horizontal crease in the middle where the page had been folded in half. Signed by Green.

Artist Information

Justin Considine Green is an American cartoonist who is known as the "father of autobiographical comics." A key figure and pioneer in the 1970s generation of underground comics artists, he is best known for his 1972 comic book Binky Brown Meets the Holy Virgin Mary. Green's short comics pieces appeared in various titles and anthologies including Art Spiegelman's and Bill Griffith's anthologies Arcade and Young Lust. But in 1972, he was overwhelmed by an urgent desire to tell the story of his personal anxieties. Binky Brown Meets the Holy Virgin Mary is a solo comic book that details Green's struggle with a form of OCD known as scrupulosity, within the framework of growing up Catholic in 1950s Chicago. Intense graphic depiction of personal torment had never appeared in comic book form before, and it had a profound effect on other cartoonists and the future direction of comics as literature. Green's roommate at the time, Art Spiegelman, was so inspired by Binky Brown that he thought he'd try his own memoir-type story, a strip he called "Maus" which some years later became the seed of Maus.
