Brittle pages; Coverless. Cover is a color copy. Schomburg, Everett cvr; 1st Submariner/Human Torch battle issueAlthough the Angel is featured on the Bill Everett cover design, the main feature is this book is without a doubt the heavyweight showdown between two of Timely’s Big 3, this issue contains the first ever confrontation between the Sub-Mariner and the Human Torch, and New York City is their battlefield! Namor rampages around the Big Apple causing all sorts of a ruckus, destroying bridges and tunnels and zoos, killing humans and animals with aplomb until the Torch comes to the rescue with Betty Dean stuck in the middle of the two superbeings. It's fire v. water in this faceoff, and although Subbie holds his own, he repeatedly flees in the face of Torchie’s inferno. The reader is treated to a tour of NYC while this battle ensues, and Burgos’ illustrations of the Metropolis are almost as fun as the super battle they serve as the backdrop for, and this is merely part one of this gargantuan melee, which ranges across the next two issues of Marvel Mystery. Also included is the requisite Angel adventure, and the typical anthology antics starring Ka-Zar, Electro, and The Masked Raider. A true classic of Marvel’s Golden Age.
