1st appearance of Plastic Man, w/ origin; 1st app. Phantom Lady, Firebrand, and Human Bomb

Police Comics #1 is a highly collectible Golden Age classic for the vital first appearance of Plastic Man — along with Phantom Lady, although Plastic Man was the only character who thrived into the Silver Age and beyond. DC Comics would keep the pliable Plastic Man going after they bought out Quality Comics in the '50s. The company still put more effort into making the Elongated Man a big deal. Take a look at this issue's origin for Plastic Man (aka gangster "Eel" O'Brien), however, and you'll see how this colorful character became beloved as a chatty hero who'd foreshadow the success of Deadpool and Ambush Bug.

That origin reveals how Eel had his life of crime cut short by a betrayal and a bullet. After being doused with a mysterious chemical, he awakens in a monastery with a newfound ability to stretch and mold himself into any shape he chooses. And lo, the first stretchy superhero is born, influencing a variety of other similarly supple copycats. The additional first appearance of the cult sensation Phantom Lady in this historic issue only adds to the overall magnetism of this sleeper hit of the Golden Age.
