Fred Ray cover + Joe Shuster art
Superman #9 boasts one of the all-time classic Superman covers from the mighty Fred Ray, whose amiably powerful Superman came to define the character's public and merchandising persona for the first decade of his existence. This issue is also a top Superman collectible for two classic stories. That includes Clark Kent ditching his timidity whenever a framed Lois Lane isn't around in "The Phony Pacifists." There's also the surprisingly brutal "Joe Gatson, Racketeer." The story begins with Superman foiling a judge's suicide, and ends with a grim twist on "faster than a speeding bullet." Instead of stepping in to protect the judge's kidnapped daughter from a gunshot, Superman just kills off the titular gangster by throwing him into the bullet's path!
