Batman #232 shows the classic team of Dennis O'Neil and artist Neal Adams looking to add a mystic touch to Batman's rogues gallery while returning a brutal sophistication to DC's beloved title. The team created an immortal opponent for the Dark Knight by combining Arabic mythology, yellow peril tropes, and some late-60s psychedelic touches. Ra's al Ghul (whose name translates into "the Demon's Head") was an immediate favorite with readers, becoming the first truly legendary addition to the Batman mythos since the introduction of the Riddler in the late 1940s. His megalomaniacal fervor, startling intelligence, and ferocious skill made his repeated clashes with Batman the stuff of legend.

Later on, the addition of his exotic daughter Talia would provide an added frisson to the proceedings. It was no surprised when noted director Christopher Nolan turned to Ra's al Ghul to launch his acclaimed Batman trilogy with Batman Begins, with Liam Neeson's vivid portrayal looming large over the acclaimed films. This first appearance in the comics survives in surprisingly low numbers, and the remaining copies almost never come to market, as they are hoarded jealously by fervid Bat-fans who refuse to part with this modern classic. An iconic Adams cover makes this book even more appealing to serious Bronze Age collectors.
