Frank Miller cover/art; 1st solo Wolverine title; 1st appearance of Yukio (cameo); 1st use of the phrase "I'm the best there is at what I do"; COMIC BOOK IMPACT rating of 8 (CBI)

Wolverine #1 was inevitable as a solo turn for Marvel's favorite Canadian mutant. Wolverine had quickly become the break-out star of the revamped X-Men in the wake of 1975's Giant-Size X-Men #1. Marvel still took their time in making the first Wolverine title a true event. Fans were already excited to see beloved X-Men scribe Chris Claremont writing the Limited Series. Marvel then announced Frank Miller would join the book as penciller and co-plotter — with Miller in the midst of his own acclaimed run as the creative force behind a revitalized Daredevil.

This classic first issue includes the 1st appearance of female ninja Yukio, as well as Logan's first utterance of, "I'm the best there is at what I do..." The book also sent Wolverine to Japan for a modern-day noir that further liberated the hero from traditional superhero settings. From here, Wolverine's offbeat path would ultimately make the X-Man a pioneer in serious super-hero cinema. The character's continuing pop-culture impact was once again confirmed in 2024, with the big-screen Deadpool & Wolverine breaking box-office records (including the record for the highest-grossing X-Men film).
