Four Color Comics #16 (aka "Mickey Mouse Outwits the Phantom Blot") marks Mickey Mouse's first appearance in comic books, with the 1941 debut launching a decades-long stint on the newsstands. Of course, Mickey had already spent several years in daily newspaper strips. Few characters would still ever match what became Mickey's enduring career in the comics. "Mickey Mouse Outwits the Phantom Blot" is an exceptional start, too. The wild story features fantastic art from Floyd Gottfredson, along with great guest turns by Minnie Mouse and Pluto.
Mickey would remain a regular presence in Dell's Four Color series, usually under the banner of Mickey Mouse and Friends . That title would become its own book in 1953, later abbreviated to simply Mickey Mouse — which continues to be published today. Four Color Comics #16 remains the launchpad for one of the world's most beloved comic book stars, and one of the industry's greatest successes in mass marketing.
