Rare, rare, and rare! Charles Quinlan cvr/art

Catman's creators may have been doing their best to emulate the success of a certain Caped Crusader, but Catman Comics #18 demonstrates why Catman (and his sidekick Kitten) became true Golden Age legends despite their book's spotty distribution. Cover artist Charles Quinlan deserves special credit for continually finding new ways for Catman to stand out on the newsstands. This classic cover is a typical Quinlan masterpiece of mood and style, with the dramatic lighting and wild framing adding even more action to the image of Catman and Kitten under assault from a knife-wielding assassin with a swastika tattoo on his hand. The inclusion of a patriotic war bonds poster into the design is nicely subtle, as well. This is the kind of book that instantly gets the close attention of Golden Age fans when a copy (rarely) comes up at auction.
