Pg. 1, Alex Ross painting, water color and pencil on paper; 11" x 17"
From the story Case Study; also used in Daniel Wallace's book The Joker

When Alex Ross burst on the scene in 1994, comic-book readers asked, "Who is this guy?" and "What's he doing next?" His knack for super-realism was a sea change from what was then a declining state of comic-book art. Most of the art in the early 90s was influenced mainly by Japanese manga, Todd McFarlane's rise in popularity as an illustrator, and a legion of wannabes. Alex Ross elevated the comic-art form in the way stalwarts like Neal Adams, Jim Steranko, and John Byrne had done decades before. Ross is well known for his full-color representations, so this incredible piece is very special because it is done in black and white. In this gorgeous splash, Ross perfectly captures the dark essence of the Joker -- a twisted smile in a broken mirror, a reflection of a shattered soul. Original art by Alex Ross is highly collectible and, in our opinion, will increase in value in the years to come.
