Stan Lee and Jack Kirby kept the Marvel Age on a winning streak with the debut of Incredible Hulk #1, with the book becoming yet another Silver Age key and top collectible. In addition to introducing readers to Dr. Bruce Banner and his brutal alter-ego, this timeless classic marks the first appearances of Betty Ross, Rick Jones, and General "Thunderbolt" Ross (the latter set to remain a major part of the Disney+ Marvel Universe). The iconic cover image continues to resonate with fans to this day.

Stan Lee wasn't happy, however. He demanded a change after seeing the original botched coloring process for the Hulk's debut. The second issue would change the Hulk from a blotchy gray to his green-skinned glory. Hulk would then survive his own title’s quick cancellation to keep thrilling comics fans, eventually coming back with a top-selling book and a hit '70s television show. From there, the Hulk’s return to the big-screen Avengers reignited the public’s passion for both the troubled hero and his alter-ego of Dr. Bruce Banner.

A F/VF copy of Incredible Hulk #1 is truly a rarity. Even when we work with comics like these daily, it's a surprise to come across one this nice. The Hulk was so popular when he first appeared that clean high-grade copies are much scarcer than many other books of the same era. Mostly due to being folded and stuck into kid's back pockets, traded away or lent to friends, most surviving copies are not even close to high grade. Bold colors make this book very desirable, which should cause a real frenzy of activity come auction time.

Overstreet Guide 2017 F/VF (7.0) value = $32,000.

Artist Information

Jack Kirby is called 'The King of Comics' for a reason, during his career that spanned six decades he gave us many of the most iconic characters the medium would ever see. From his introduction of Captain America at the height of World War II it was clear he wasn't your ordinary comics artist. But it was his creative explosion at Marvel Comics in the 1960's that cemented his legacy, over a short period of time Kirby would give us The Fantastic Four, Iron Man, The Hulk, The X-Men, Thor, Ant-Man and Nick Fury just to name a few. Kirby would then go to DC and create his Fourth World, introducing Darkseid, Mister Miracle, The New Gods and a host of cosmic supporting players. Long live The King.
