1st full app. Sgt. Rock; scarce!
Our Army at War #83 is now in the DC archives as the official first appearance of Sgt. Rock, with the WWII hero endangered by a cocky cohort in "The Rock and the Wall!" It's true that there had been a few prototype turns by a gruff Sarge in WWII tales prior to this classic issue. This stirring tale of true manliness really is a proper introduction to Rock, via writer/editor Robert Kanigher and full art by Joe Kubert. Sgt. Rock would soon lead Easy Co. into becoming the stars of Our Army at War as the wartime comic became one of the industry's biggest success stories. The book officially changed the title over to Sgt. Rock in 1977 to continue its run right up to July 1988.
