Spacehawks by Wolverton (1st comic work); Eisner, Cole, Kane art (6/38)
Highest Graded
Like many of comics' earliest artists, Basil Wolverton started out as a cartoonist, aiming for the funny pages of the daily papers, failing to find a home for his unique, surrealistic voice in the increasingly staid comic strip marketplace. His brief stint as a young vaudeville performer, and his eye for grotesquerie, resulted in a googly-eyed, manic, almost psychedelic style, decades ahead of its time. Luckily, the early comic book market was hungry for young talent that could produce stand-out material quickly and cheaply, and like many of the art form's pioneer, Wolverton got his break aping the comic strip fashions of the day for low-budget publishers, as in this incredibly rare entry from the tiny Globe Publishing company. The busy, harried cover belies the historical contents, as not only Wolverton, but future titans Will Eisner, Jack Cole, and Bob "Batman" Kane also get their early efforts published in this giant slab of early comics goodness. Serious Golden Age hounds know that historic documents like these are the "caviar" books of comic collecting, insanely rare and incredibly important.

Artists Information

Jack Ralph Cole was an American cartoonist best known for creating the comedic superhero Plastic Man, and his cartoons for Playboy magazine.

Will Eisner is an American cartoonist, writer and entrepreneur who's one of the earliest cartoonist to contribute to the comics industry. Will is famous for his experiments in content and form in comics as well as popularizing the term "Graphic Novel". Will Eisner's most recognized works are The Spirit and A contract with God.

Basil Wolverton is primarily recognized for his bizarre and grotesque caricatures that he made his name with in the second half of his career. Starting out as an independent artist, Wolverton worked in a relatively normal, but personal, style throughout the Golden Age, contributing sci-fi and GGA comedy pages to a variety of publishers, including a tenure at Timely. After winning a national contest to draw "Lena the Hyena" which was published in Al Capp's Li'l Abner strip, Basil switched over to his renown "spaghetti and meatballs" style, which consisted of highly detailed and disturbing malformed creatures. Working at Mad Magazine for a spell, Wolverton built up his distinct style and would continue to create shocking and unforgettable images for comics like Plop! through the Bronze Age until his passing in 1978. Since his death, recognition and fanfare for the artist's unique talents have grown in stature, leading his original pages to go for impressive numbers, as well as influencing underground and independent artists who came after him.

A celebrity comic artist of the Golden Age, co-created Batman and Robin with Bill Finger, as his brainchild became more in demand he hired an army of ghost artists to illustrate the dearth of Batman features on the market, but all were credited to Kane. His other achievements include the creation of Catwoman, Two-Face and cartoon character Courageous Cat. Kane was the object of some controversy for taking credit for the art and inspiration of others, but he was also undoubtedly an important figure in the history of comics. He published an updated version of his autobiography "Batman and Me: The Saga Continues" shortly before his death in 1998. He got his start at the Eisner/Iger studio and was inducted into the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame.
