In this issue-length storyline, the fearsome Solomon Grundy has escaped from imprisonment and is on the warpath to bring down his hated nemesis, the Green Lantern. The hulking grey villain wreaks havoc across the entire book, battling several members of the JSA in turn and knocking some of them out, getting knocked out himself, heroes fall off cliffs, battle bank robbers, and imposters, going all out in their efforts to contend with Grundy. The action culminates in a battle royale where the JSA manages to subdue Solly, and send him back into exile, this time, he is trapped on the moon, seemingly with no way to return to Earth. This awesome issue is a whole lot of fun, highlighting the continuing metamorphosis from anthology to single-story comics that were coming into vogue, this book did a lot to help make Solomon Grundy one of the premiere DC bad guys, establishing him as a mainstay of the publisher for decades to come. Interesting side note, this issue is the first time Wonder Woman is not referred to as the secretary of the JSA, which was pretty lame, but predictable for the period.

Earning a VF+ 8.5, this copy of All Star Comics #33 shines with an iconic Irwin Hasen Solomon Grundy cover. Everyone's favorite JSA members appear equally humorous and heroic, as they struggle to escape from Grundy's clutches. The black background appears starkly against the bright colors of the title banner and the mesmerizing crystal ball, with Grundy's glowing gray visage being a perfect melding of the two. Approaching 75 years old, and one of less than 200 copies on the census, this would be a welcome addition to any collection.

Overstreet Guide 2021 VF+ (8.5) value = $4,055.
