Joe Simon (as Glaven) pencils and inks; 1942; matted 14.5" x 20"
Jon Berk CollectionJoe Simon, of Captain America fame, rendered the pencils and inks for this remarkable Golden Age cover art in 1942 under the pseudonym Glaven as many artists and writers often used pseudonyms in the 30s and 40s. Pen names helped creators preserve contract loyalty with the artist's main employer while allowing them to get as much work as possible elsewhere. It also made it easy for small companies to give the impression of being a larger firm by turning one person who does three jobs into three separate people. This cover art shows the Human Meteor fighting ghoulish foes while rescuing a falling beauty, his sidekick, Toby, cunningly disarming one of the ghouls. This lovely Joe Simon piece is going to be admired for generations to come.
