Dan Zolnerowich cover; rare issue! low print run; COMIC BOOK IMPACT rating of 6 (CBI)
Planet Comics #15 hit the newsstands with yet another cover featuring a titular Scourge of Neptune tossing a terrified woman into a pit holding a tentacled beaked crocodile-creature as a brave Space Ranger blasts away with a ray gun. That would be a typically enticing lure from Planet as the first proper sci-fi comic (carrying on from the pulp roots of Planet Stories). Regular cover artist Dan Zolnerowich was really hitting his stride by this issue, and the familiar stunning yellow backdrop amplifies his eye-catching imagery. (It's worth noting that it's a little unusual to see a damsel in distress here; Planet was just as likely to have cover gals blasting aliens with ray guns.) Reef Ryan is the featured hero, and he's joined inside by Mars, God of War (in his first appearance as a headlining Planet antagonist), along with Pluto-based adventurer Norge Benson and Flint Baker as Reef's fellow Space Ranger. There's also a story from pioneering comics writer Audrey Blum, credited here as Toni Blum.
