Card #153 of 301 of the Magic the Gathering: Time Spiral, set 1 of 3 in the Time Spiral blockGreg makes excellent use of the analogous color palette in this painting of Firemaw Kavu. He captures the ferocity and the terror of the beast, but draws us in expertly with his use of color and light. As if often the case with Hildebrandt paintings, the subject feels realistic, even though it is complete fiction. The brushstrokes vary from tight and controlled in some spaces, to lose and energetic in others. This variety is one of the highlights of Greg s style. It displays his ability to understand the many complexities and distinctions one must understand in order to make a complex fictional subject appear believable on a two dimensional surface. It controls where are attention will go first, but allows your eyes to wander to take in the image as a whole.

Greg Hilderbrandt is an american painter/comic book artist, and twin brother of Tim Hilderbrandt who is also an artist. Collectively they worked on numerous comic books, movie posters and trading card for many years until Tim's unfortunate passing in 2006. Individually Greg has worked on album covers, pin-up art and currently the cover artist for IDW's Star Trek. The brothers Hilderbrandt's most notable work includes, The lord of the rings calender illustrations, Star Wars movie posters and the Magic the Gathering trading cards.
