Highest GradedSurprisingly, Detective #27 contains no origin for Batman. In Detective Comics #33, the story of how Batman came to be is told for the very first time including the murder of his parents. The Dark Knight's tragic beginnings have been embedded in American culture and become the archetype origin for countless characters that followed (hello Robin). Readers later enjoyed the reprinted story in Batman #1. Also of note is the unusual and infamous cover image, in which the Dark Knight is seen armed and dangerous, breaking the code against guns that was to become a cornerstone of the character's makeup over the years. A startling and classic image, from the beloved first year of the hero's adventures, rich with gothic shadows and crude, almost nightmarish graphics. Rarely are such antiquated books so well-kept. This copy is in remarkable unrestored condition. Coming in at a 9.2, it's exceptionally well-maintained for any comic, let alone for a Golden Age key. The bright saturated colors contrast against the black swooping figure of Batman as he descends onto two terrified gangsters to dispense swift justice. This is an essential piece of comic book history fit for the most illustrious of collections.

Artists Information
Moldoff is best known for his early work on DC's Hawkman and Hawkgirl, and was one of Bob Kane's primary "ghost artists" on Batman. He co-created the Batman villains Poison Ivy, Mr. Freeze, the second Clayface, and Bat-Mite, as well as the original heroes Bat-Girl, Batwoman, and Ace the Bat-Hound.
A celebrity comic artist of the Golden Age, co-created Batman and Robin with Bill Finger, as his brainchild became more in demand he hired an army of ghost artists to illustrate the dearth of Batman features on the market, but all were credited to Kane. His other achievements include the creation of Catwoman, Two-Face and cartoon character Courageous Cat. Kane was the object of some controversy for taking credit for the art and inspiration of others, but he was also undoubtedly an important figure in the history of comics. He published an updated version of his autobiography "Batman and Me: The Saga Continues" shortly before his death in 1998. He got his start at the Eisner/Iger studio and was inducted into the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame.
