This cover art for Terry and the Pirates #25 is full of the machismo, action, and powerful graphics that had become synonomous with the pulpy style of war comics of the era. The exciting Lee Elias illustration was typical of his storied career, working on titles such as Black Cat and All Star Comics in the 40s and 50s, only to leave the industry after being singled out in the "Seduction of the Innocent" hubbub. Upon his return he worked well into the 70s on titles like Human Fly and Power Man before taking a job at the Kubert School. This piece stands as a testament to the solid contributions Elias made to the storied history of comics, and is an excellent example of his talent and expertise in composition.

Artist Information

Lee Elias was a British-American comics artist. He was best known for his work on the Black Cat comic book published by Harvey Comics in the 1940s. Lee Elias left comic books after the 1954 publication of Fredric Wertham's anti-comics book Seduction of the Innocent, which used four of his Black Cat panels as examples of "depraved" comic art. In 1972, Elias came back to American comic books, working mainly on DC's various horror titles and secondary Marvel Comics titles including Power Man and The Human Fly. His last major project was The Rook series for Warren Publishing.
