By the final issue of Wonderworld Comics, the featured cover star, the Flame, had been supplanted by U.S. Jones, one of the numerous Captain America clones that publishers like Fox Features Syndicate had been pumping out to comic fans to cash in on the patriotic wartime marketplace, and although there was a cynical factor to these copycat heroes, it really does little to diminish the fun and action these books served up to the public in a time of great anxiety and loss. In this issue, Jones does battle with the White Killer, a villain who likes to poison his victims while wearing a lightbulb shaped helmet and all-white costume. U.S. Jones eventually captures the Nazi agent and unmasks him as the manager of a touring baseball team, which he used as a cover for his nefarious deeds. There is also some female energy in this issue as Flame Girl, and hard-nosed private eye Patty O’Day get in on the anthology action. Wonderworld Comics was responsible for helping launch the careers of several big names in the industry, Lou Fine, Dick Briefer, George Tuska, and Matt Baker all got their start working on Fox titles, making this last issue in the run of particular interest to collectors of the series.

Hailing from the noteworthy Jon Berk collection, one of the greatest accumulations of Golden Age comics known to the hobby, this copy of Wonderworld #33 is far and away the finest example on the census, and with only 15 copies recorded, the book is extremely rare and difficult to come by. Since this is a Mile High pedigree copy, it will be expected to sell at multiples of guide prices, the impossible condition of this example is typical of the high caliber expected from Edgar Church copies, the most respected of all pedigrees. Expect this to be one of the highlights of the final day of bidding in this remarkable Event Auction, so save some gas in the tank if you are planning on making a play for this special comic.
