classic Jack Burnley WWII Nazi periscope cover

Superman #23 features one of the most beloved (and collectible) covers of the WWII-era books, with the Man of Steel about to become a super-torpedo heading toward some terrified Nazis. Cover artist Jack Burnley even dared to show Superman with a vengeful stare. (The kids at the newsstand probably noticed that the cowardly Axis forces had just sunk a simple supply ship carrying civilian mariners.) This striking imagery also sets up the interior tale of "America's Secret Weapon," in which Superman joins some American forces in war games. This kind of classic comic endures as both a pop-culture artifact and WWII memento.
