Japanese WWII Human Torch cover; Remember Pearl Harbor issue
During WWII it was commonplace in propaganda and other forms of media to demonize one's adversary, and images that are obviously racist, and sometimes shockingly so, were an everyday occurence in the heady days of the war. This Al Gabriels cover for Marvel Mystery #32 shows the Human Torch battling Japanese soldiers who seem to be part vampire or goblin, and the "Remember Pearl Harbor" emblem in the upper-right corner leaves absolutely no doubt as to the intention of the staff at Timely, to dehumanize our foes and therefore make the idea of killing them digestable. This is a classic wartime cover, the likes of which will never be seen again in our politically correct times, but for fans of Golden Age action, these are the exact types of covers that hit all the bases, and also elicit an emotional response from viewers as intended. An additional little treat in this book is the text story "Last Ride" by one MIckey Spillane.
Although there is some minor wear at the top and edges, this book is in solid condition, the hues are bright, and the central image is unmarred. The rarity of this comic, along with its historical importance make it a serious collectible, a favorite of Golden Age Timely fans, and a popular item at auction.
