Flash Comics #36 remains a top Golden Age collectible for Lou Ferstadt's wild cover introducing the macabre menace of the Rag Doll. Peter Merkel makes his first appearance here as the bizarrely triple-jointed contortionist who turns to crime after he loses his work at a carnival. This story soon became a classic comic for the Rag Doll's realistic transformation into a costumed criminal. His disturbing presence may even have been too much for the Golden Age, as Rag Doll quickly found himselff consigned to a single battle against the Flash, joining the initially short-lived ranks of Batman foes like the Riddler and the Scarecrow.
Like those characters, though, Rag Doll made a return in the Silver Age, and has gone on to decades of appearances throughout the Comic Ages. It's been a particularly grim path, too. Merkel turned into a deranged sociopath as his bizarre physique tortured him as he began to age into his 60s. Rag Doll would then join other villains enhanced with new powers by the demon Neron. The creepy criminal remains one of the most memorable of the foes that faced the Justice Society and Justice League over the years.

Artists Information
Moldoff is best known for his early work on DC's Hawkman and Hawkgirl, and was one of Bob Kane's primary "ghost artists" on Batman. He co-created the Batman villains Poison Ivy, Mr. Freeze, the second Clayface, and Bat-Mite, as well as the original heroes Bat-Girl, Batwoman, and Ace the Bat-Hound.
E. E. Hibbard was an American comics artist who worked for DC Comics in the 1940s. He was one of the main artists behind 'The Flash' superhero stories by Gardner Fox. He was the first artist to illustrate a 'Justice Society' story and created the recurring villains Winky, Blinky and Noddy and Thinker in the 'Flash' franchise.
