DESCRIPTION
"Marvel Feature #1 & 2"; Foreign copy; Italian Version; 1973
origin & 1st app of The Defenders (Sub-Mariner, Hulk, Dr. Strange); Neal Adams cover; COMIC BOOK IMPACT rating of 8 (CBI)
As far as super-hero teams go, the Defenders are ultimately the most ragtag team of individuals trying to accomplish a single goal. Unlike the Avengers or Justice League, the Defenders are comprised of solo heroes with little to no affiliation with each other who mostly have their own agenda. With the cancellation of Doctor Strange’s comic, the formation of the team is the result of several crossover story arcs from Doctor Strange #183, Sub-Mariner #22, and Incredible Hulk #126, where the heroes unite to fight off an extra-dimensional invasion of demons. In the beginning the team was anchored by Strange and Hulk dealing with mystical threats, but unlike many other supergroups in comics the Defenders had a very unstable roster, including such disparate heroes as Silver Surfer, Valkyrie, and Luke Cage. Throughout the years the team would be led by different heroes assembling the squad for various missions, such as Doctor Strange forming his own "Secret Defenders" and Valkyrie enlisting her own "Fearless Defenders.” In 2014 Marvel teamed up with Netflix to create shows for their characters including Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, and Iron Fist, the heroes banded together in a crossover mini-series named “The Defenders,” making it the first on-screen appearance of the superhero team. With the Defenders now an A-list team in the comics world, and nearly all of their characters’ TV rights back with Marvel Studios a new series is likely in the works down the line, promising to drive up the value of this book once again.

Artists Information

Bill Everett was an American comic book writer-artist best known for creating Namor the Sub-Mariner, as well as co-creating Daredevil with writer Stan Lee for Marvel Comics. Everett fell into comics almost by accident in the industry's earliest days, creating the character Amazing-Man for Centaur Publications in 1939. That same year saw Everett contributing the first Sub-Mariner story for Marvel Mystery Comics #1, the very first book from Timely Comics (which would eventually become Marvel Comics). Sub-Mariner would prove to be one of Timely's earliest hits, and Everett would continue drawing Namor's adventures until 1949. In the '50s, Everett would continue working for what was now Atlas Comics on numerous titles, occasionally reviving Sub-Mariner. With the explosion of the Marvel Age in the '60s, Everett joined Stan Lee in co-creating and drawing the first issue of Daredevil. He also found regular work contributing to Tales to Astonish and Strange Tales. The Sub-Mariner would return again in Tales to Astonish #85, continuing there (and then in his own title) with sporadic contributions from Everett. Bill Everett died suddenly at the age of 55 in 1973.

Ross Andru was an American comics artist and editor. He is best known for his work on The Amazing Spider-Man, Wonder Woman, The Flash, and The Metal Men, and for having co-created The Punisher. During Andru's long career he also worked on Sgt. Rock, the Suicide Squad features in the Brave and the Bold, Rip Hunter, Time Master and Sea Devils at DC. At Marvel Andru contributed to Marvel Feature (where he drew the 1st appearance of The Defenders) and Marvel Team-Up among others.

Don Heck was an American comics artist best known for co-creating the Marvel Comics characters Iron Man and the Wasp, and for his long run penciling The Avengers during the Silver Age.
