origin of Green Lantern retold; classic cover
Green Lantern #1 has the Golden Age hero moving into his own title with the debut of an iconic logo after an impressive run in All American Comics. Howard Purcell's classic cover also features a striking black background and a dynamic rendering of our hero (aka Alan Scott) fighting an evildoer. The premiere issue features co-creators Bill Finger and Marty Nodell's retelling of the origin of the Golden Age star, plus bios and photos of Finger and Nodell (plus William Moulton Marston, here writing an essay on the importance of will power as "Dr. Wm. Moulton Marston").
Green Lantern's solo title would enjoy a successful run from 1941 to 1949, Of course, the character of Green Lantern would be successfully revived in the Silver Age, and the original Green Lantern would be featured in crossover stories featuring the Justice Society of America. This title would still remain the only showcase for the original GL until 2023's Alan Scott: The Green Lantern. This copy of Green Lantern #1, certified in FN+ condition, with its black cover background, which tends to magnify any imperfection, is very clean and free of color breaks, a rarity for this iconic cover. The book is solid and with a potential GL reboot on the horizon, owning a copy of his origin story is a wise play.
Overstreet Guide 2018 FN+ (6.5) value = $11,794.
