Highest GradedStar Ranger #1 is notable for being the first of two comic books, both published simultaneously by Centaur, to feature a western motif on its cover. Western-themed pulps and dime novels were a hugely popular genre, portraying the outlaws and lawmen of the old west as modern day supermen captured the imaginations of city folk across the country, and likely, some of the very same characters portrayed in the tales enjoyed reading overblown accounts of their exploits as well. Centaur had the lucky foresight to publish the first comic books to employ the genre, and in doing so, launched a long-running and very successful western comic book industry. These early books would grow into the absolute cowboy comics boom of the 1950s, and this is where it all started. This oversized comic is the highest-graded example on the census, proving the absolute scarcity of this ground zero western comic. Fans of the genre will no doubt be seeking out this important gem, whose colors still present a kick, and a central image that remains relatively clean and solid.
