"Finds Pirate Gold"; 1st Carl Barks Donald Duck (8/42) COMIC BOOK IMPACT rating of 8 (CBI)
Four Color Comics #9 is historically significant in that it was the first time a young, hungry, comic artist named Carl Barks worked on what would go on to become his trademark character, Disney’s Donald Duck. Barks was employed by the House of Mouse when he decided to leave the company and strike out on his own, before doing so he worked on a feature-length Donald Duck story with Jack Hannah, which ended up being reworked into Donald’s first issue-long adventure “Donald Duck Finds Pirate Gold.” The higher-ups at Disney liked what they saw, and Barks returned to the publisher and began his long-running relationship with Donald, his nephews, Huey, Dewey, and Louie, and also, what was considered his masterwork, his tales involving Donald’s Uncle, Scrooge McDuck, for many years to come. There is a strong, devoted fanbase for Carl Barks’ art, and this is where it all began. Four Color #9 is one of the most valuable Golden Age books around which was not put out by Marvel or DC, so when it comes up for auction, it is always an important event.
