historic new origin; first Andru/Esposito in titleIssue #98 of Wonder Woman is a major moment in the mythos of the character, with the arrival of new artists Ross Andru and Mike Esposito, Princess Diana is partially reinvented and provided with a fresh start. The featured cover story presents Diana in a competition to determine the champion of Paradise Island. First, battling warriors disguised as herself to avoid any prejudices on her mother's behalf, as she is the judge of this competition. The rest of the issue focuses on the Amazon's attempt to convert a solitary penny into a million dollars. Despite a myriad of distractions, she achieves the feat, proving herself worthy to represent her people as a defender of good in the outside world.
Wonder Woman #98 is notoriously difficult to find, especially in above average condition, this reboot of the series is represented by less than 150 copies on the census, many of which sit beneath the grade of this book, and although this comic is a good find at any grade, this 6.5 copy is a very appealing example. The bright blues of the sky meld into the light greens of the water, enhancing the duo of Dianas battling atop a lopsided log. The wear that is situated around the perimeter of the cover does not take much away from the overall impact of this sturdy copy. As the release of “Wonder Woman 1984” grows ever closer, the collecting world clamors for important key books in the Amazonian Princess’ oeuvre. This goddess is finally getting her well-deserved respect, and prices are reflecting her newfound value across the board.
Overstreet Guide 2019 FN+ (6.5) value = $1,760.
