All-American Comics #90 features a classic Green Lantern cover rendered with great skill by the highly respected Irwin Hasen. The cover shows our intrepid protagonist battling the chilly Icicle in his first appearance, as terrified boat passengers run for cover below. This scenario was likely inspired by the Titanic and its unfortunate collision with an iceberg. Given the vintage of this issue, The Icicle was probably one of the first iterations of the ice-powered superbeing, leading the way for many others throughout the different eras of comic books.
This ambitious story has remained a favorite of creators over the years, keeping the Icicle (aka Joar Mahkent) and his equally evil son showing up in DC titles over the decades. Both generations of the Icicle would also become major players in the small-screen DCU, with the crime family responsible for the Smallville deaths of Hawkgirl and Dr. Fate in the CW Multiverse. Of course, Alan Scott's role as the original Green Lantern has kept the character going as a prominent name in the DC Comics line. That legacy will only grow more valuable as the DC Extended Universe launches the hotly anticipated Lanterns series on HBO Max.
