Capt. Jim and the Chinese Pirates by RA Burley; originally published in Funny Picture Stories V1 #5
Highest GradedR.A. Burley began his career after his serivce in WWI. He left the Art Students' League in 1923 and worked steadily as an illustrator for various adult-themed pulp magazines for many years, honing his skills in what would turn out to be the perfect training regimen to prepare him for the birth of the comic book. Very little is known about Capt. Jim and the Chinese Pirates, save for the fact that this adventure story was typical of the anthology offerings of the period. This sort of yellow peril tale was commonplace at the dawn of the funny book, political incorrectness and all. By the time Burley created these pages he was a veteran illustrator subsequently going to work for Centaur and National Comics during the Golden Age before suiting up for battle once again reenlisting to fight in WWII at the age of 52. This singular collectible is sure to receive a lot of attention from bidders due to its uniqueness in the marketplace.
We've never seen this book before, we've never heard of it, nobody has ever mentioned it, and it doesn't appear anywhere in the Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide. This supplement represents a whole different level of impossible that we almost never see. This discovery is tailor-made for collectors who chase after only the hardest to find comics in the hobby.
