Who would have thought anyone could be nostalgic for war? Yet, that's kind of what has happened in recent years as latter-day audiences have clearly responded to the action-packed patriotic imagery of the type Alex Schomburg turned out regularly for Timely's parade of pro-Allied comics during the dog days of the Second World War. This startling cover, featuring the destruction of a German dam, is a prime example of the hyper-detailed, frantically busy worlds of wonder Schomburg could conjure up without breaking a sweat, and it's little wonder that comics fans and wartime memorabilia collectors continue to respond to his special brand of hyperactive and bombastic propaganda.

Hailing from the respected San Francisco pedigree, this copy of Marvel Mystery Comics #47 is one of the three top-graded examples listed on the CGC census. The book is in impeccable condition, the Alex Schomburg cover has never looked better, the colors are resplendent, the spine is stable and tight, the corners are sharp, and the book is in a state of preservation that belies its 80-year vintage. Schomburg fans and wartime collectors are going to duke it out over this amazing classic comic. With a reboot of the Fantastic Four due to be announced shortly, this early Human Torch appearance is likely to see renewed interest from investment bidders as well.

Overstreet Guide 2022 NM- (9.2) value = $6,900.

Artist Information

Known for his dizzying, bustling war covers, bondage covers and airbrush Sci-Fi covers! Truly one of the most highly collected artists of the Golden Age. Alex Schomburg was born on May 10, 1905, in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, Schomburg freelanced primarily for Timely Comics, the 1940s forerunner of Marvel, displaying his talent for action tableaux in covers featuring Captain America, the Sub-Mariner, the Human Torch, and other superheroes. He also provided covers for Pines Publications, for titles including Exciting Comics and America's Best Comics, featuring such superheroes as the Black Terror and the Fighting Yank, as well as for Harvey Comics. Stan Lee said the following about Schomburg "I've always felt that Alex Schomburg was to comic books what Norman Rockwell was to The Saturday Evening Post. He was totally unique, with an amazing distinctive style. You could never mistake a Schomburg cover for any other artist's. ... I remember hearing Timely Comics publisher Martin Goodman tell me time and again how great a cover illustrator Alex was, and how he wished we had more like him. Despite the quantity of work we gave him, despite the care and effort that went into every Schomburg cover, I cannot remember Alex ever being late with any illustration."
