Spider-Man's first appearance in Amazing Fantasy #15 was an overnight sensation, leading to a hurriedly prepared solo title from co-creators Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. (Marvel still brought in the top-selling Fantastic Four on the cover as insurance.) The book remains one of the cornerstones of comic collecting--featuring the first appearance of J. Jonah Jameson as one of the most iconic supporting characters in the history of comics. The book is also notable for including The Chameleon as Spidey’s first supervillain. The shape-shifting spy has been one of the major missing figures in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and is finally set to make his big-screen debut in this year’s Kraven the Hunter film.

No matter how many examples you’ve seen of this world-famous key, it never fails to take the breath away to lay eyes on any copy of this book. It’s a time machine, a revelation, a nearly perfect slice of pop culture history. Certainly, one of the most important comics ever published, and one of the most famous and beloved, there’s no way that any serious collector can resist taking a shot at adding this issue into their world-class collection, a gem, a milestone.
