Edgar Church / Mile High CopyWhile the big guns at DC and Fawcett fought out turf battles over caped heroes, and Timely cornered the patriotic market, other publishing houses like Quality turned to proven talent to carve out a space on the overstuffed comic racks of the pre-war period. As a result, shops like the Will Eisner studio found themselves in high demand, having already proven themselves with the wildly popular Saint supplement stuffing Sunday sections across the country. Quality kept the Eisner artists hopping, along with other top-notch draftsmen, and in the process, created runs of unusually well-drawn and extremely collectible comics that are treasured by collectors and scholars alike. This issue features some of the major heavyweights of early graphic illustration, including Eisner himself, Fred Guardineer, Reed Crandall, and of course, Jack Cole, whose cartoonishly surreal Plastic Man strip is one of the great unsung marvels of the early hero craze.
