Detective Comics #2 stepped away from the debut issue's Yellow Peril to focus on good old American criminals. Creig Flessel was also ready to settle in as the book's primary cover artist, establishing the gritty moods and milieu of the early run of Detective Comics. The title would soon become the darkest and certainly most atmospheric of all Golden Age DC titles, and one which excited readers even before Batman would swing into action to take over the title. The first several years of this compelling comic remain among the most revered and collectible of all Golden Age books. The finely-wrought covers by pulp maestros Craig Flessel were also ushering in a new age of creatives, with Detective Comics #2 featuring work by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster just a year away from Superman's debut in Action Comics #1.
There are only 23 copies of this pre-Batman issue of Detective Comics on the CGC census, the classic Creig Flessel cover design hearkens back to the halcyon days of the pulps that were the direct inspiration to comics. Thanks to the extreme rarity of this issue, it is a real cause celebre whenever a copy comes up for auction, and this particular copy is the second-highest graded, with only one 9.0 posting higher up the boards. If Eldon Dedini only knew what his humble comic book was valued at nowadays, I’m sure he would be quite impressed. The cover retains its bright color scheme, and the majority of wear is relegated to the perimeter of the book. If you are in the market for a Detective #2 act now, you may not get another chance any time soon.
