John Cullen Murphy art; oil painting; image size 20" x 24"Beautiful oil painting of an unknown Catholic figure, possibly a Pope. Wonderful, classic technique by Murphy, in the style of the old master painters.
John Cullen Murphy was the creator of the comic strip Big Ben Bolt before he was hand selected in 1970 by Hal Foster to assist and then eventually take over the Prince Valiant Sunday strip, which he would continue until his retirement in 2004. His stunning realism was a perfect fit to follow Foster and it shows here in this painting. Oil paint on stretched canvas. Painting is in good condition, there is some overall cracking and a couple of chips have fallen off. Signed by Murphy on the reverse.
