Bernard Baily cvr/art; Origin & 1st app. the Spectre; Comic Book Impact rating of 8 (CBI)
DC Premiere CollectionOne of the darkest of Golden Age origin stories, the opening panels of the Spectre's first appearance feature our hero, Jim Corrigan, stuffed into a barrel, encased in cement and drowned, a grisly fate even by pre-code standards. Returning as a spirit of vengeance, Corrigan then goes on his merry way, smiting evildoers in increasingly ironic manners, their deaths becoming more and more gruesome. This surreal and unforgettable series has proven to be a cult favorite.
The title More Fun Comics stands in ironic opposition to the dark tale contained within this issue's pages. Invented by Superman co-creator Jerry Seigel, the Spectre's origin story spanned three issues, and soon after the anti-hero went on to become a popular figure in DC's stable, eventually joining the Justice Society of America and, later, enjoying a renaissance in the mid-90s. The recent resurgence in popularity led to increased interest in the character and, increased value in Spectre books in general.
The grade on this copy of More Fun #52 makes it available to collectors that are typically priced out of the field on this important DC key. The book is complete, the colors are still strong, and the price is right. The classic CGC label lets you know this copy has been around the hobby for a while, appreciating in value and waiting for its next owner to bring it home. Jim Corrigan has appeared in DC’s Arrowverse, which may be a clue to a solo series or film down the road, owning the Spectre’s origin story has always been considered a good investment, even before the media driven atmosphere of the hobby that influences today’s marketplace.
