classic L.B. Cole devil cover
The main attraction behind Suspense Comics #11 is, without question, this incredible L.B. Cole cover featuring the Devil drowning a group of gangsters in piles of money. The classic image inspired legions of early collectors to track down both this book and other examples of enduring art. The stories inside, however, have also distinguished this 1946 comic as a true Golden Age artifact. The mystery tale with the Grey Mask features the hero's pioneering Black sidekick Dove, who'd eventually get co-billing on the title. There's more cultural significance in a comedic detective yarn with female protagonist Sherry Flippe. Each story was penned by the prolific Jack Crooks, with the book's Golden Age artists including Rudy Palais and George H. Appel.
Boasting the typically bold "poster color" style incorporated by L.B. Cole in his most recognizable covers, this copy of Suspense Comics #11 is a wonderful example of the power and artistry that was on display during the wild and woolly days of the Golden Age.
