DESCRIPTION
crm/ow pgs; Conserved: pcs re-attached; tear seals; spine splits sealed; reinf; staples replaced; cvr & 1st 2 wraps married.
Bob Kane cvr/art; Joe Shuster, Fred Guardineer art, last Batman solo issue
This comic would be the last time the Batman would fight crime as a solo act in Detective Comics as he was soon to be accompanied by his trusty sidekick, Robin, in an effort to appeal to readers of a younger demographic. While this is not the last pulpy, moody, dark Detective cover, it represents a shift in the tone and demeanor of the early, dangerous, lone-wolf vigilante, which is only one reason Batmaniacs should be chomping at the bit to get their hands on this copy.

This timeworn survivor of the ages has admittedly seen better days, but there is an elusive charm about a comic book that has persevered through multiple decades and lived to tell the tale. Copies at this grade still go for impressive numbers thanks to the cultural significance of this issue, the last to feature a solo Batman for some time. If you have been biding your time in hopes of snapping up this book, here’s your chance. This conserved copy is going to see heated competition at auction thanks to its scarcity and relative affordability.

Overstreet Guide 2019 G (2.0) value = $4,900.

Artists Information

Joseph Shuster was a Canadian-American comic book artist best known for co-creating the DC Comics character Superman, with writer Jerry Siegel, in Action Comics #1.

A celebrity comic artist of the Golden Age, co-created Batman and Robin with Bill Finger, as his brainchild became more in demand he hired an army of ghost artists to illustrate the dearth of Batman features on the market, but all were credited to Kane. His other achievements include the creation of Catwoman, Two-Face and cartoon character Courageous Cat. Kane was the object of some controversy for taking credit for the art and inspiration of others, but he was also undoubtedly an important figure in the history of comics. He published an updated version of his autobiography "Batman and Me: The Saga Continues" shortly before his death in 1998. He got his start at the Eisner/Iger studio and was inducted into the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame.
