Slightly brittle pages; Slight (C-1) small amount glue spine cvr of cvr & int.
1st app. of Archie, Betty, & Jughead
While the superhero craze was booming across newsstands, up and coming publishers were looking for ways to stand out from the pack by creating new twists on existing tropes. In the case of MLJ, pay dirt had already been struck with Wilbur, the original comic-book teen craze, leading Bob Montana to pitch his idea for an awkward, girl-crazy teen based on his own experiences and sketches from his teenage years in small-town Massachusetts. As with his predecessor, the character's first appearance was an instant hit with readers, but unlike the rather cartoonish and limited Wilbur, Archie's personality and social circle were completely relatable to contemporary American youth and proved to be not only resilient but arguably the most commercially successful comic book creation of all time after Superman. One of the scarcest of major Golden Age keys, this first appearance of Archie Andrews has attained iconic status in recent years, as collectors have cottoned to its importance, value, and scarcity.
You may not realize by looking at the cover but hidden inside this issue of Pep Comics #22, resides Riverdale's most lovable resident, Archie Andrews. Archie, like most characters of the Golden Age, didn't start off with his own title. Along with his friends Betty and Jughead, the enduring teen made his first appearance in this issue. This copy, which has undergone some slight restoration work, is going to be one of the more affordable options for those out there looking for this key. With bright colors and deep blacks, this is going to be one of the nicer-looking 3.0 examples you're likely to find. There are fewer than 20 original condition copies of this book on the census, making it a true rarity for Archie collectors.

Overstreet Guide 2022 GD/VG (3.0) value = $49,050.
