Jack Burnley cvr; origin & 1st app. of ScarecrowOriginally an offshoot of New York World’s Fair Comics, what was first named World’s Best Comics for one issue, led to a lawsuit from Nedor Publishing whose Best Comics was already a known quantity in the marketplace, the title was quickly switched to World’s Finest, and this is the third (technically second) issue of the series. Typically featuring incredibly happy covers showing Superman, Batman, and Robin frolicking in a variety of oddball activities, which were precursors to DC’s generally sunny approach in the Silver Age, the interiors of the comics were filled with the anthology fare typical of the period. World’s Finest #3 contains a Superman story, a Sandman story, a Zatara story, and a Batman and Robin story along with some others. The real bonus to be found within these pages is the first appearance of the Scarecrow, a Batman nemesis that would continue to evolve over the decades into one of the Bat-mythos’ biggest and most frightening villains, and considering the twisted rogue’s gallery’s list of psychotic baddies, that is quite an achievement.
