Justice League of America #1 hit the newsstands in 1960 shortly after the super team's short but successful run in The Brave and the Bold — although DC was still worried about overexposing Batman and Superman by including them on JLA covers. The two titans are still a big part of "The World of No Return," which is a typically wild tale from Gardner Fox. There's also the first appearance of Despero, who tricks the Flash into a rigged game that sends his fellow heroes to bizarre alien destinations. The memorable Murphy Anderson chessboard cover was an instant classic that has since been parodied and copied repeatedly over the years. There's also more of Snapper Carr, of course, who's brought into the book as a swinging teen sidekick styled after Edd Byrnes' success as "Kookie" in the hit TV series 77 Sunset Strip.

This is a strikingly attractive copy of a comic that we’ve seen many copies of over the years, and there is something particularly balanced about this book, not only is the color strike bright and clean, but the binding, edges and corners are quite remarkable. There is also the matter of the “Murphy Anderson” signature written on the cover, which, although unverified, does bear a striking resemblance to the legendary DC artist’s John Hancock. Regardless of the veracity of the autograph, this is still one extremely pretty copy of JLA #1.
