Bernard Baily Spectre cvr/art; origin of Dr. Fate, 1st app. of NabuThere are quite a few standout artists and writers attached to the creation of this awesome anthology book, the list of Golden Age luminaries included Gardner Fox, Bernard Baily, Jerry Siegel, George Papp, and Howard Sherman. This murderer’s row should serve as an indication of how special this comic is, headlining the pack are the Spectre and Doctor Fate, two of the more mystical and malevolent heroes from DC’s dark and daring GA output. Bernard Baily’s cover is certainly a feast for the eyes, the Spectre was always depicted as a threatening presence, but one can really feel the fear of his prey here, in some ways this cover foreshadows the horror books that would overwhelm the comic market in the 50s.
