It’s difficult to look at this cover and not immediately be reminded of the bizarre “Batman: The Movie” (1966) sequence during which the Caped Crusader dangled from a similar rope ladder while a shark chewed on his leg, leading to his use of Bat shark-repellant on the rubbery rascal. Part of the never-ending joy of collecting comics is the cyclical nature of comic history, where stories are retconned to make sense long after the fact, and the pure fun of learning the legends and lore of the industry. It goes without saying that early Batman issues are rare, in demand, and fetch impressive hauls at auction. Items of note in this issue include the first-ever mention of Gotham City as Batman’s turf, Cat-Woman’s first appearance in her trademark mask, and the fourth-ever appearance of the Joker.

There is a treasure trove of early-Batman issues available in this Event Auction, one just as impressive as the next, and this book is no exception. With only two original condition copies above it on the CGC census, this book is guaranteed to attract Batfans in droves, looking to Smash! And Whomp! one another into submission in order to land this baby. The cover presents a breathtaking color palette that has retained a glow all of these years later, and the overall construction is thoroughly impressive, with no condition issues of note.

Overstreet Guide 2020 VF+ (8.5) value = $11,250.
